Quarantine Dinner #18

Loco moco is a dish that can only be found in one place: Hawaii!

Well… two places. My home also.

Just like poi, it’s local to the islands of Hawaii.

Loco moco is a simple dish: a juicy burger on top of rice with beef gravy, then topped with a fried egg. Onions or scallions are also added.

What Is Loco Moco?

  • Rice on the bottom
  • Juicy burger on top
  • Beef gravy
  • Fried egg
  • Onions or scallions if you want

The dish seems to have been invented in the late 40s in a diner where some local kids had little money and wanted something else besides a sandwich.

So the owner came up with this dish: a burger with gravy over rice. The egg came later, and the kids liked it!

One kid said it was crazy. The other kid, who took a Spanish class, said, let’s call it loco, which is crazy in Spanish. Then someone added moco because it rhymed, and so the legend goes of loco moco.
